KIDS, TWEENS, AND TEENS CLASSES

PAINTINGS FOR TEENS w/ Jessica Reynolds Ages 12-18
Dates: Thursdays, Feburary 2nd - March 9th
Time: 4:30pm - 6:00pm
Cost: $125 Members/$140 Nonmembers
Tweens to high school will work on color theory, mixing paint and creating paintings from still life. (Still life, portrait, and landscape painting)
Supplies needed: Basic starter set of 6 acrylic paints, variety of brushes, pad of disposable palettes, plastic palette knife, artist loft canvas pad of 10 canvas sheets, 1 18x24 stretched canvas or larger.



DRAWING FOR TEENS
w/ Jessica Reynolds Ages 12-18

Tweens to high school will brush up on the fundamental drawing skills and work on perspective drawing of architectural elements throughout downtown Anderson.
Supplies needed: Set of drawing pencils, sketchbook, eraser.



ALL AROUND CLAY
w/ Evelyn Fischer
Date: Mondays, January 30th - Feburary 27th
Time: 4:00pm - 6:00pm

Do you like to play with clay? Come try your hand at 3 different techniques and find the one (or all) you like. This 8 week course is broken down into two week segments for each technique. Learn or refine your skills in coil/pinch pots, slab/sculpture building, and wheel throwing. We will spend the final two weeks glazing giving us time for fun, interesting glaze patterns. This class is designed for all students of any level.
Supplies needed:
Basic pottery tool kit (available at local craft stores). Wear old clothes as you will get dirty. All creations will be available for pick up 2 weeks after class ends.

LIGHT THEM UP LANTERNS w/ Evelyn Fischer

Hand-build a unique lantern with clay slabs. All materials such as clay, patterns, tools for carving and instruction will be provided, just bring your imagination! This class is open to all skill levels, however please use proper judgement as we will be using very sharp clay cutting knives. All creations will be glazed (your choice of glazing) and fired by instructor and ready for pick up 2 weeks after class.



BEGINNER'S WHEEL THROWING
w/ Emily Sizemore

HAND BUILDING WITH CLAY

MAKING NOISE WITH CLAY w/ Joshua Davis

In this class you will use clay to make flutes, rattles, bells, chimes and possibly a drum and a whistle! This is a hand-building course suitable for any level of experience. Wheel experience can be useful but is not required.


STORY OF CLAYw/ Joshua Davis

We’ll learn to find and process local materials for use in our work. Inquisitive minds are encouraged! Our goal is to make clays for pottery along with natural slips and glazes for decoration, with the possibility of developing new recipes. Experimental work will be the major component of this course, but we’ll also sample wheel and hand-building as we progress. Class will culminate with a barrel firing!

Choose your own challenge, medium, surface, and subject matter. The instructor will offer assistance in helping you use and select materials you may wish to use from experience and research. The whole class will offer suggestions as we encourage each other in out creative journey. In the event of inclement weather class will be made up on March 7.
Supplies needed: Choice of students and their needs. Class is for Intermediate level, those that have experience in their medium.


WATERCOLOR FOR BEGINNERS : TREES w/ Ruth Hopkins

This class is for beginning students that need some help in learning to use watercolor and prefer direction for subject matter in their painting. We will continue with understanding color mixing, handling of brushes, and basic art elements. Our emphasis will be on painting tress of many varieties, overall shapes, trunks, and distinguishing characteristics.
Supplies needed: One Flat brush ¾” or 1”, Round brush with a point size 10, a pad of 140# cold press watercolor paper, basic tubes of watercolor paints in tubes. Primary colors of yellow, red, and blue are best. If you want to have a nice selection, then you might try the following; yellow: 1 tube that looks lemon yellow and 1 that looks golden yellow, red: 1 that has a rose in its name and 1 that looks orange/red, blue: colbolt is a good basic blue and ultramarine is a nice deep blue.



FOREGROUNDS & BEYOND w/ Ruth Hopkins

This class is for those wishing to pursue depth in their paintings, both landscapes and still life. We will divide the picture plane into foreground, middle ground, and distant background. Emphasis will be on techniques to direct viewer to the portion of the painting we want them to explore. Color value is perhaps the most important.
Supplies Needed: Individual’s own typical supplies.

Learn the basics of drawing using charcoal with an artist new to the Anderson Arts Center. This class is designed for those with little to some experience and those who sketch but could use a course in the basics.
Supplies Needed: Kneaded eraser, vinyl (white) eraser, tuff stick eraser (looks like a pen), one pencil either sketching B or 2B, willow charcoal, tortillions (blending stumps). Paper provided.



LINE & VALUE DRAWING WITH INK
w/ Tracy Weiss

A good solid base drawing is the foundation for a great piece, whatever the medium. We will start there and work into fully realized ink value drawings. We will explore the basics of ink drawing as it applies to fine art, illustration, cartooning, comics, graphics novels and animation. This class is designed for adults but open to high school and JR high school students with and without prior drawing experience, We will briefly review the concepts of line quality, positive and negative space, composition, blocking in with basic shapes, proportions, perspective, and value and shading as they apply to ink drawings. We will explore various types of line drawings such as gesture, contour blind contour, and value. We will learn tips and techniques for drawing with nib pens and ink and ink washes. We will endeavor to produce one line drawing and one value drawing. Note: India is indelible. It will NOT come out of your clothes, so plan to wear a smock or old clothes.
Supplies Needed:
Vinyl (white) eraser, one pencil: either sketching HB, B or 2B, one wide tip black pen and one fine point black pen (Sharpies are good and inexpensive), one standard pen holder and nibs for drawing / sketching / cartooning (can be purchased separately or in sets) and one bottle of black (India ) ink. OPTIONAL: If you already have them and want to bring them: Water color pencils, colored artists pens, illustration/magna markers, colored and black ink and brushes.



DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY - BASICS TO EDITING

In this class you will learn the camera’s basics functions and settings then practice by taking photos and have them critiqued by the instructor. In addition you will learn some of the processes that go into editing your pictures. Participants must have a digital SLR or DSLR camera to use. Note: Please bring your instruction manual for your camera to class with you as well as a few images you have recently taken. A laptop and software are optional but can be used for the editing portion of the class.



POINT & SHOOT PHOTOGRAPHY

ENCAUSTICS w/ Kim Bowen

Learn the wonders of the ancient art of Encaustics. Encaustics involves the use of liquid pigmented wax on panels. The wax can be applied in layers, embedded with objects, textured, or even carved. Personal photos and other printed material can be incorporated into the art work. A variety of methods and techniques will be shared during the class.
Supplies Needed: 3-4 chip brushes (1/2 inch) can be purchased at Loews. If you have a heat gun or an electric griddle please bring that along.

INTROSPECTIVE LANDSCAPES Workshop with Artist Bill Jameson
Date: March 16, 17,18, 2017 Time: Daily from 9:00AM-3:00PM. Cost: Members $350.00/Nonmembers $375.00 Come spend 3 days developing paintings using photographic references, starting with a small and quick study, next developing an abstraction, then completing work. If it is a mystery why not all photos make good paintings, learn why and how to determine the desirable qualities your references should have. Work in the medium of your choice.
